He Frowned
-
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful -
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّىٰ
He (Muhammad) frowned and turned away.4
-
أَن جاءَهُ الأَعمىٰ
When the blind man came to him.3

وَما يُدريكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكّىٰ
How do you know? He may purify himself.4

أَو يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكرىٰ
Or he may take heed, and benefit from the message.4

أَمّا مَنِ استَغنىٰ
As for the rich man.3
-
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدّىٰ
You gave him your attention.2

وَما عَلَيكَ أَلّا يَزَّكّىٰ
Even though you could not guarantee his salvation.3

وَأَمّا مَن جاءَكَ يَسعىٰ
The one who came to you eagerly.2

فَأَنتَ عَنهُ تَلَهّىٰ

Indeed, this is a reminder.2

Woe to the human being; he is so unappreciative!2

From a tiny drop, He creates him and designs him.3

ثُمَّ السَّبيلَ يَسَّرَهُ
Then He points out the path for him.2

Let the human consider his food!1

We pour the water generously. -
فَأَنبَتنا فيها حَبًّا
We grow in it grains.1

وَحَدائِقَ غُلبًا
A variety of orchards.1

وَفٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
Fruits and vegetables.2

-
مَتٰعًا لَكُم وَلِأَنعٰمِكُم
To provide life support for you and your animals.2

-
فَإِذا جاءَتِ الصّاخَّةُ
Then, when the blow comes to pass.1

يَومَ يَفِرُّ المَرءُ مِن أَخيهِ
That is the day when one flees from his brother.1

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبيهِ
From his mother and father. -
وَصٰحِبَتِهِ وَبَنيهِ
From his spouse and children. -
لِكُلِّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم يَومَئِذٍ شَأنٌ يُغنيهِ
Each one of them, on that day, worries about his own destiny.4
-
وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ مُسفِرَةٌ
Some faces on that day will be happy.2

وَوُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ عَلَيها غَبَرَةٌ
Other faces, on that day, will be covered with misery.2

تَرهَقُها قَتَرَةٌ
Overwhelmed by remorse.1

أُولٰئِكَ هُمُ الكَفَرَةُ الفَجَرَةُ
These are the wicked disbelievers.
